Mocean
Free beta. No account, no install.

Frame-by-frame animation, right in your browser.

Sketch with onion skinning, make your lines boil, and trace over GIFs or video. Works with Apple Pencil, saves on your device, and exports straight to the web.

Made in Mocean: the intro animation for my portfolio, lettered frame by frame over otter footage. See it live at minhtranportfolio.vercel.app.

Onion skinning

See up to three frames before and after, so every drawing lines up with the last.

Rotoscope anything

Drop in a GIF or video and draw over it frame by frame. The background moves with your timeline.

Line boil, built in

Copy a layer to the next frame and retrace it. Set an intro that plays once and a loop that repeats.

Feels good with a pencil

Pressure, palm rejection, smoothing, pinch to zoom, two-finger tap to undo.

Layers and selection

Lasso, move, scale, flip, snap to center, and keep sketch, lines, and color separate.

Export your way

A web player for your site, PNG sequences for After Effects, sprite sheets, or video.

How it works

No sign-up and nothing to install. Open it and start drawing.

  1. Open Mocean

Tap Open Mocean. Your first project is ready. On iPad, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen, and it works like an app, even offline.

  2. Draw your frames

Draw, then press New for the next frame or Duplicate to start from a copy. Onion skin shows the frames around you in red and blue so everything lines up.

  3. Play it back

Press Play. Hold a frame longer with Hold, set your speed, and use Loop from here to make an intro that plays once and a loop that repeats.

  4. Export and share

Export a web player for your site, a PNG sequence, a sprite sheet, or a video. Use Save project to keep a backup file you can open again later.

Works on

Mocean runs in the browser you already have. It saves your work on the device you use it on.

Best for drawing

iPad with Apple Pencil

Safari on iPadOS 15.4 or newer. Pencil pressure, palm rejection, pinch to zoom, two-finger tap to undo.

Computers

Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari on Mac, Windows, Linux, or a Chromebook. Use a mouse, trackpad, or drawing tablet.

Phones

It works, but the screen is small. Great for checking or tweaking an animation, nicer to draw on a tablet or computer.

Offline

After your first visit it keeps working without internet. Add it to your Home Screen or install it from your browser's menu.

Questions

Is it really free?

Yes. No account, no trial, no watermark, and no ads inside the editor. It is also open source, so anyone can check how it works. If it helps you, a coffee helps keep it that way.

Where are my drawings saved?

In your browser, on your device. Nothing is uploaded, so nobody else can see your work. That also means clearing your browser data deletes it, so use Export, then Save project, to keep a backup.

Can I move a project to another device?

Yes. Use Export, then Save project to get a .json file, send it to the other device, and open it from Your projects, then Import .json.

Can I trace over a video?

Yes. In Background, choose Image, GIF or video. Each frame shows the video at its point on your timeline, so you can rotoscope frame by frame. MP4 works best.

It's early, and I want your feedback.
